About Hessonite Garnets
Hessonite Garnets or cinnamon-stone is a variety of grossular garnets. The name grossular is derived from the botanical name for the gooseberry, grossularia, in reference to the green garnet of this composition that is found in Siberia. The color of hessonite ranges from range and orangy red to brownish red. Unlike other garnet species like pyrope and almandine, which are very common, Hessonites are relatively rare. They can also occur in other colors like pink and green, but it is most known for its cinnamon-like colors. When viewed under magnification, Hessonite Garnet has lesser transparency in various areas. This makes it more distinguishable from gemstones of the same color, like Topaz and Citrine. These garnets often have a turbulent inner appearance called the roiled effect.
The most well-known Hessonite Garnet deposits can be found in Sri Lanka, but it is also mined in India, Myanmar, Madagascar, India, Brazil, Tanzania, Italy, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the USA.
