About Rubies

Derived from the Latin word "rubrum" meaning red, Rubies are always associated with shades of this color. It can range from pink to an intense shade of red resembling blood.

Rubies are the gem variety of the mineral Corundum. Red shades of corundum are classified as Rubies while all other shades are classified as Sapphires.

It has a Mohs Hardness of 9 on a scale of 10, which makes it very suitable for daily wear. The Refractive index of rubies ranges from 1.762-1.778.

The most sought-after color in ruby is the Pigeon's Blood Red color. This term represents the finest hue in rubies with a bright and vivid red color.

Gem quality rubies of size greater than 5 carats are extremely rare and can be very expensive. The finest and most expensive rubies come from the Mogok region in Burma. Other notable regions include Vietnam, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, India, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Other varieties of ruby which hold significance are Trapiche Ruby (with a spoked wheel-like formation) and Star Ruby (displaying a six-rayed star on the surface).
