About Chrysoberyls

The name Chrysoberyl is derived from the Greek words Chrysos and Beryllos, meaning "a gold-white spar". A lot of people confuse this mineral with the more popular Beryl due to the similarity in their name. Although both contain Beryllium, they belong to completely different mineral families.

Chrysoberyl is the world's third-hardest naturally occurring gemstone which makes it an excellent choice for wearing on day to day basis. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, Chrysoberyl was also referred to as "chrysolite" causing confusion as the same name is also used for Peridot.

Ordinary chrysoberyl is yellowish-green and transparent to translucent. They also have been found in shades ranging from light brown, chocolate to an extremely pleasing shade of Honey. Chrysoberyl is also popular for it's more popular varieties of Cymophane (Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye) and Alexandrite.

Chrysoberyl forms as a result of pegmatitic processes due to which crystals are often quite large, which increases the likelihood of good gem specimens forming.
