About Alexandrite Cat's Eye

Alexandrite Cat's Eye combines two alluring optical phenomenon found in the mineral chrysoberyl - chatoyance and color-change effect. Since Alexandrites are in themselves extremely rare, those stones that also display a cat's eye effect are almost priceless.

They display the typical color change from green in daylight to red in incandescent as seen in most alexandrites. These stones must be cut into cabochon for them to display the chatoyancy effect.

These stones are generally milky, but it is not uncommon to find stones which are transparent while having a strong cat's eye effect.

Depending on the extent of the color-change, an alexandrite can be extremely expensive. The most valubale are stones which appear a perfect green like an emerald in daylight and a perfect red like ruby in incandescent. Such stones however, are highly limited and rare to find. They are today found in many other counrties like India, Madagascar, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
