About Pearls
Pearls belong to the category of organic gemstones, which means that the stone is not derived from the earth by mining, but rather from biological sources. These are formed in nature when small particles irritate the body of certain Mollusks. This can be as trivial as small grains of sands. The Mollusk creates secretions of calcium carbonate called nacre which coat the irritant. Over time these secretions result in the formation of Pearls.
The best pearls are moonlike, smooth and free from blemishes. Pearls are found in many locations like Sri Lanka, India, the Persian Gulf, Venezuela, Mexico, and Australia. Pearls originating from the Persian Gulf also more popularly known as "Basra" are extremely popular and can command very high prices.
Cultured pearls form in a similar way to natural pearls, the main difference being that the irritant is deliberately induced for the formation of a pearl.
Pearls have a refractive index of 1.530-1.685 with a hardness of 2.4-4.0 on the Moh's hardness scale. They come in many colors such as White, Yellow, Pink, Black, Gray etc.
