About Star Sapphires

Star sapphires are a variety of sapphires which display the optical effect called Asterism. When cut as a cabochon, it displays a six-rayed star on the surface which moves with the movement of the stone.

Star sapphires are most commonly seen in blue and black colored sapphires, although they can be present in almost any shade.

It has a Mohs Hardness of 9 on a scale of 10, which makes it very suitable for daily wear. The Refractive index of sapphire ranges from 1.762-1.778.

Star sapphires with a royal blue/cornflower blue color displaying a sharp star are very rare to find. Such stones are an excellent choice for engagement rings since they represent uniqueness and are one-of-a-kind. Blue star sapphires are primarily found in Burma, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Madagascar.

Another notable color is black star sapphire with a golden star. These stones are generally found in India and Thailand.
